Why are there gnats in my kitchen?

I came home from dinner last night and found several what I think are gnats walking all around the floor. I though gnats just fly around but these were just walking all over the floor so I am not sure if they are gnats are not. My kitchen it clean the only thing I noticed were a few white rice pebbles on the floor which had fallen down from the night before. Could this have been the cause?
