How do I get rid of gnats quickly and safely?

I woke up this morning to a cluster of gnats around my trash. This is the first I've seen of them and I'd like to get rid of them as soon as possible before 20 becomes 200. I'm 27 weeks pregnant so I want to avoid using any dangerous chemicals. I've set out a vinegar and dish soap mixture, but is there a quicker solution?
